Stuck at home? Need a way to make some extra cash? Working from home has never been easier, thanks to our modern advancements in technology. Now jobs that were previously only accessible from an office, can easily be done from the comfort of your home. Not only does this open the doors for people like stay-at-home mom’s, but even has brought many people back home that are tired of hustling to work every day or even somebody that needs to stay home to caretake for a parent. The possibilities these days are truly endless.

- Medical Transcriptionist– A perennial favorite of at home work has always been medical transcription. In order to become a medical transcriptionist, you must go thru training, either at an institute or a community college. These courses usually last between 9-12 months, cost typically around $2,000. Average earnings= $17/hr
- Take Surveys– Taking surveys is one of those jobs that you never really knew existed, but they do! There are plenty of companies who want to test an audience and are willing to pay for your time and opinions. Be forewarned that these jobs do take time, but once you get a rhythm and set aside some time, you can earn some extra cash. Check out sites at SwagMonkey, SurveyJunkie. Earn between .50-5.00 per survey depending on length.
- Babysit– Babysitting is as old as the day is long! Now, this isn’t a job for everyone, but if you like kids, have a safe home and are patient, this is a great idea. There are different state laws depending on how many kids you have in your care. In my state, Arizona, you care for up to 4 kids without having to get licensed. If you’re watching your friends/neighbors kids, even daily, expect to earn $10-$15/hour. If you have become licensed with your state to run an in-home daycare center, expect to earn $18 or more.
- Virtual Assistant– Virtual assistant is a position that has been made out of our sheer digital necessity. Jobs that we typically had to hire in-house, or even use a temp agency for, have been replaced by virtual assistants. Anything from technical work, like design and coding, to customer service, to straight clerical work, can be hired out. Chances are that most people have some skills that can be used. Sign up at sites such as Upwork, Fiverr, and BelaySolutions for VA jobs. You set up an account, send over a resume, usually do some skill testing and you’re ready to go. Expect to make on an average of $15/hour. This can vary greatly depending on your skill level and job assigned. IE, the more technical, the more money!
- Web Designer/Developer– This is a great job is you’ve got the skills. I myself went back to school and got a degree in Web designer, and it’s a good job. Sure there are plenty of DIY website design platforms, but for custom work, nothing beats a good web designer! One of the ways that you can generate income after your design work, is to offer your customers a monthly subscription package where they pay you monthly to maintain and update their site. Imagine 10 customers who pay a $100/month fee. That’s an extra $1000 per month for basic maintenance. Expect to earn $22-$32/hour.
- Translator– If you’ve got language skills then this is for you! Look for possibilities in a bilingual call center, transcription, and interpreter jobs. Sites such as 1800Translate, Aberdeen, LanguagelineSolutions, etc. Expect to earn $23-$40/hour depending on the job.
- Call Center Rep– Call centers, which in the past have been located near a companies headquarters, often ran large operations, which included expensive equipment, rent, and office supplies for large numbers of call center reps. These days, technology is so proficient they have almost entirely eliminated the need for physical call centers. While these jobs can be on the lower end of the pay scale, averaging around $13/hour, expect to make far more if you have a technological job.
- Fiverr– If you’re looking for quick work as a freelancer, then Fiverr is for you. People put up a job with a price tag attached. If you accept that job, you complete the job and are paid by Fiverr. The problem with Fiverr is that many of the jobs are extremely low paying, and after Fiverr takes their cut, and you pay the money handling charges, you make considerably less. It’s a great option if you’re technically proficient and fast. I would consider it a great place to start if you can make quick money for short, easy jobs.
- Writer/Editor– Becoming a writer/editor is a great job if you’ve got time and experience. There are tons of options for you. Everything from writing an Ebook, to copywriting for others, to editing people writing. While this may take a college degree and some expertise, and experience, it’s a great gig. Typical pay is $25-$35/hour.
- MLM sales– Multi-Level Marketing sales are on fire these days. How many of us have seen our friends on family, hocking everything from skincare to energy drink on Facebook? Does it get a bit obnoxious sometimes? Sure. But is there money to be made, yes! The key to good MLM sales is picking a great product and company, use it, and stick to it. Many times people flit from one to another which leads people to think you’re flaky or not invested. Find a product you love and go after it!
- Airbnb Host– AirBnb’s are a great way to make extra money. Perhaps you’ve got an extra guest house on your property, or a vacation home that you don’t use, or even a large event where there’s limited housing, (think Super Bowl or Stugis!) This can be a great alternative. Renting a home/room during peak times, or events can command top dollar, making you lots of extra cash. Beware of the wear and tear on your home, tax implications, and also the local housing codes for your area.
- Pet Hotel- While a typical Pet sitter may go out and walk dogs, or visits people’s homes to care for their pet, a pet hotel is where you bring a dog(s) into your own home while the owner is away. I worked as a pet sitter for years and we always did this. I had my own dog, and only brought in dogs that I knew, and my dog got along with. This was a ton of fun. And a great money maker. I charged roughly $40/night, which was cheap compared to multiple pet sitting visits, and cheaper than a kennel. There are downsides, it’s wear and tear on the house and yard, and sometimes a neighbor might not love the fact that you’ve got extra dogs around all the time. But if you’re ok with it, and they don’t mind, it’s great money!!
- Blogger/Vlogger– Perhaps my favorite work at home scenario is that of a blogger/vlogger. Why? Well because it’s exactly what I like to do. Not only do you get to be creative, interact with others, but you also get to learn and teach yourself stuff! Have I mentioned that it can be quite lucrative?? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a long process and it takes time, but with passion, dedication, and devotion to your blog, you can early a nice living. Expect to earn- Sky’s the limit!
- Search Engine Evaluator– This is a great job is you love searching for stuff on Google! I know I do! The basic gist of a SEE is that they analyze search results for relevancy and quality. Expect to make around $12-$15/hour.
- Online Teacher– So let’s say you’ve got a teaching job already, and you’re looking for more work. This might be the job for you! Many work as adjunct professors, meaning they’re paid per contract, or per class taught. Contact your local Community College job boards or even online schools like the University of Phoenix.
- Social Media Marketer– Now this is a fun job! So you like Facebook, and Instagram and Snapchat, and all that stuff, right? Well, this might be for you! Social marketing seeks to influence social behaviors not to benefit the marketer, but to benefit the target audience and the general society. They are also responsible for creating, implementing, and managing various social marketing campaigns for companies. This can be quite a large scale job depending on the company, or even a great job for freelancers that want to help many small companies improve their social media presence. This can be quite technical, and you must know all facets of social media, including advertising. Expect to make anywhere from $15-$30/hour depending on experience and campaigns.
- SEO/PPC Consultant- SEO stand for search engine optimization, and PPC stands for Pay Per Click advertising. This too, along with social media marketer, aims to help website owners bring more traffic to their site. This can be done organically thru SEO strategies, or thru PPC, where you are paying for ads on such vehicles as Google, and Facebook. This job can be very technical, but it’s also very lucrative. Be prepared to have lots of technical knowledge, and also be held to a standard that is measurable, such a visitors to site, increase in revenue, etc. Expect to make $20-$50/hour depending on experience.
- Sell Arts/Crafts- This is a great idea for those craftsy mom’s out there. If you make jewelry, soaps, signs, etc, this is a great avenue to make some extra cash. Check out sites like Etsy, or even eBay to sell your designs.
- Data Entry– Everybody needs some data entry at some point, and almost everybody can probably type. So if you feel like you lack skills or can’t find something you’re comfortable with, try data entry. Look online at VA websites, or even talk to your local businesses, to see if they need additional help. It’s often easier and cheaper to pay somebody per job, then to bring in another employee. Expect to make $12-$18/hour depending on your skill and how technical the job is.
- IT Support- Speaking of technical, this is for you. Many small businesses out there are looking for good, solid IT help. Now yes sometimes, you may have to spend some time in the client’s office working on computers or networks, but much of it can be done online.
If you’ve ever considered ditching the 9-5 office job, for a job at home, nows a great time! Be your own boss, make your own rules, and fulfill your own destiny! I know, its a bit dramatic, but being self-employed and working out of your home is awesome. Be prepared to work extra long hours, and struggle at the beginning, but if you’ve got good skills, are organized, and a hard worker, you can do it. Give it a shot!
